November 4     1 Corinthians 14

Paul discusses order in worship.  We see in bulletins every week an order to the service.  We do this not to be rigid or say that this is the way things have to be.  The order is so that things can be done in a way that flows. How chaotic would it be if we just had a free-flowing service where nobody knew what would happen next?  Paul was trying to make sure they had order in their services because they were running into issues of confusion about what was happening.  People were not getting out of the time together what they should have because they didn't really know what was going on.  We must be careful that an order of service does become a mere routine.  Sometimes because we know what to expect we can go through the motions without thinking about what we are doing.  Why do we sing?  Why do we give offerings?  Why do we take time to study God's Word?  It is not just because it is on our list for a service.  Each thing in the order has a purpose.  If we remember the purpose, we are better prepared to really engage in worship.  If we merely think about it as a routine or schedule to follow, then we are ready to check down a list so we can walk out the door for lunch.
