October 27   1 Corinthians 5

(I typed up a message for yesterday and thought it was posted but I do not see it this morning.  I am not sure what happened, but I am sorry that the devotional thought did not post as I thought)

Paul is dealing with sin in the church in this chapter.  It was not a pleasant thing to have to deal with unrepentant sin, but it was necessary to ensure that there was accountability.  Paul's words may seem hard, but they are coming from love.  He wanted sin dealt with decisively and completely.  He gave instructions for church discipline.  He emphasizes that we need to fix the problems within the family of God.  We need to deal with our own issues rather than focusing on the sins of the world.  It is easier to judge the world than ourselves, but sin in a life without Jesus should be seen as unsurprising and fairly normal,  but sin in the life of the believer should be seen as surprising and abnormal. We need to take care of our own messes before we try to deal with the messes of the world.  In reality we should be continually doing both- holding each other accountable in the church and sharing the hope of Jesus to people who do not know him.
