March 7 Hebrews 5
The priestly line was the tribe of Levi. Jesus was not a Levite, but was from the tribe of Judah. Jesus needed to be from the tribe of Judah to be a king and fulfill prophecy from the line of David. But, how can he be a priest if he is from the tribe of Judah? Hebrews 5 calls him a priest in the line of Melchizedek. Melchizedek was called a priest in the book of Genesis, long before Aaron and the priests that would follow. Melchizedek was also called the King of Salem. The name Salem means "peace". So, Melchizedek was considered both priest and king. Jesus is referred to as both king and priest as well. Melchizedek foreshadows Jesus all the way back in Genesis. If you get a chance read the story of Melchizedek and Abraham in Genesis 14:18-20.
