February 22   1 Timothy 6

This section includes one of the most misquoted verses in the Bible.  How many times have you heard that "money is the root of all evil"?  This is not correctly stating what the verse states and can cause major ramifications if not understood correctly.  This verse makes it sound like money itself is inherently bad and is always problematic.  However, the verse is talking about the "love of money"  which is actually more of a concern of the heart of a man.  This verse is suggesting that when a man loves money, or the pursuit of money is the focus of their life, then it leads to all sorts of evils.  One of those evils is actually idolatry if money becomes the most important thing in life and the pursuit of money shapes our actions.  Just ask Judas what the love of money could lead people to do.

This stands in contrast to a previous verse "But godliness with contentment is great gain".  Rather than pursuit of money and possessions we should seek contentment that comes as we keep the LORD as the proper focus of our lives. There is nothing wrong with money or possessions as long as they have the proper place in our lives.  Contentment is very undervalued but is a good pursuit in our lives because it helps us find satisfaction in what the LORD has given us rather than disappointment in what we may not.
