April 16   Revelation 11

The concept of Jerusalem being destroyed and especially the Temple being destroyed has happened at various times throughout history.  Jesus actually predicted the destruction of the Temple before his death, and it was fulfilled in 70AD. There is a plan and desire to rebuild the Temple, but conflict and other issues in Israel continue to hamper the progress.

The two witnesses bring to mind the prophets of old- Moses and Elijah.  Moses speaks to Pharaoh and plagues come on Egypt for his stubbornness and lack of belief.  Elijah called down fire from Heaven in the contest with the prophets of Baal.  Elijah also was involved with a drought in his ministry.  Many people believe the two witness actually are Moses and Elijah sent into the world.

We are also called to be witnesses for Christ in our day.  We may not be able to breathe fire, but we are more than capable of speaking truth to a world that needs the hope of Jesus.  When we read of the two witnesses in Revelation we must be reminded of the call to witness in Matthew 28- the Great Commission for each of us to go and make disciples.
